DISCLAIMER This is not a gay-bashing site - quite the opposite - we believe that these cartoon characters should be honest with themselves and with the world, and that they should be able to live freely and honestly, out of the closet, being true to their own feelings and to their true orientation.

Bert & Ernie Are Not Gay A CTW Press Release
The San Francisco Bay Guardian of 5 January, 1994, reprints a letter to the editor of TV Guide (date not given; the SFBG mention is in a year-end roundup edition, and so this might have been taken from anytime in 1993).
Julianne H. Sallee, of Pocanontas [sic] AZ, complained about a TV Guide article praising "Sesame Street", saying:
"After reading your article, 'TV That is Good for Your Kids', it was reported to me that Bert and Ernie are gay. My grandchildren will not be watching 'Sesame Street' anymore, and I hope you will relay that message to Executive Producer Michael Loman."
SFBG reports the Children's Television Workshop response:
"Bert and Ernie do not portray a gay couple and there are no plans for them to do so in the future. They are puppets, not humans."
"Sunny day, chasin' the clouds away, hip hooray, that puppet's gay."
